Formerly known as Class A and sometimes Low-A, Single-A baseball is the fourth-highest level of play in Minor League Baseball (MiLB).
Single-A is below Triple-A, Double-A, and High-A, and above the Rookie classification.
Thirty teams are classified at the Single-A level, one for each team in Major League Baseball (MLB), and organized into three leagues: the California League, Carolina League, and Florida State League.
Single-A baseball is one of the foundational levels of Minor League Baseball. Although it is not the lowest level, that being the Rookie-level, it is the entry point for many players starting their professional careers.
The classification of Single-A was created in the 1960s, providing a structured system for player development. In 1963, Classes B, C, and D were abolished, with leagues at those levels reassigned into Class A, while the South Atlantic League (renamed the Southern League) and the Eastern League were elevated to Double-A.
In 1965, a Class A Short Season designation was created for teams playing June-September schedules, and the Class A-Advanced designation was established in 1990, between Class A and Double-A in the hierarchy.
Currently, Single-A consists of the Florida State League, the Carolina League, and the California League.
The Florida League is divided into East and West divisions. The East Division comprises the Daytona Tortugas, Jupiter Hammerheads, Palm Beach Cardinals, and St. Lucie Mets, while the West Division includes the Bradenton Marauders, Clearwater Threshers, Dunedin Blue Jays, Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, Lakeland Flying Tigers, and Tampa Tarpons.
The Carolina League includes North and South divisions, with the North Division made up of the Carolina Mudcats, Delmarva Shorebirds, Fayetteville Woodpeckers, Fredericksburg Nationals, Lynchburg Hillcats, and Salem Red Sox, and its South Division featuring the Augusta GreenJackets, Charleston RiverDogs, Columbia Fireflies, Hickory Crawdads, Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, and Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
The California League has North and South divisions. The South Division includes the Fresno Grizzlies, Modesto Nuts, San Jose Giants, and Stockton Ports, while the South Division has the Inland Empire 66ers, Lake Elsinore Storm, Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, and Visalia Rawhide.
The top two teams in each league, based on full-season winning percentage, meets in a best-of-five postseason series to determine league champions, regardless of division.
