This category will examine High-A baseball, officially known as Class High-A, and sometimes abbreviated A+.
High-A is the third-highest level of play in Minor League Baseball (MiLB), below Triple-A and Double-A, and above Single-A.
What is now Class High-A was established as Class A-Advanced in 1990 by dividing the existing Class A. In 1963, the three classes below Class A (Classes B, C, and D) were abolished, with leagues at those levels moved into Class A. In 1965, Class A was subdivided for the first time, with the establishment of lower-level Class A Short Season leagues. The 1965 hierarchy was in place for twenty-five years, until Class A was further subdivided in 1990, with Class A-Advanced becoming the third-highest classification.
This created, in hierarchical order: Triple-A, Double-A, Class A-Advanced, Class A (Full-Season A), Class A Short Season (Short Season A), and Rookie League.
This arrangement lasted until 2021, when Major League Baseball (MLB) restructured MiLB, eliminating Class A Short Season and discontinuing the use of all historical league names within Minor League Baseball. Existing Class A-Advanced leagues were moved to the Class A level and operated under generic names (Low-A West, Low-A East, and Low-A Southeast) during the 2021 season. The Class A-Advanced level was renamed Class High-A, and also operated three leagues with generic names (High-A Central, High-A East, and High-A West). However, in 2022, the MLB announced that the leagues would revert to their former names.
High-A baseball is divided into three leagues: Midwest League, Northwest League, and South Atlantic League.
The Midwest League is subdivided into East and West divisions. The East Division includes the Dayton Dragons, Fort Wayne TinCaps, Great Lakes Loons, Lake County Captains, Lansing Lugnuts, and West Michigan Whitecaps. The West Division consists of the Beloit Sky Carp, Cedar Rapids Kernels, Peoria Chiefs, Quad Cities River Bandits, South Bend Cubs, and Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The Northwest League has no divisions, and includes the Eugene Emeralds, Everett AquaSox, Hillsboro Hops, Spokane Indians, Tri-City Dust Devils, and Vancouver Canadians. The South Atlantic League is divided into North and South. The North Division includes the Aberdeen IronBirds, Brooklyn Cyclones, Hudson Valley Renegades, Jersey Shore BlueClaws, and Wilmington Blue Rocks, while its South Division has the Asheville Tourists, Bowling Green Hot Rods, Greensboro Grasshoppers, Greenville Drive, Hub City Spartanburgers, Rome Emperors, and Winston-Salem Dash.
High-A leagues typically hold postseason playoffs to determine league champions, although the structure of these playoffs can vary between leagues. Usually, the top teams from each division compete in a series of games.
