Manufacturers and retailers specializing in various kinds of targets are this category's focus.

Targets are a fundamental component of several sports and recreational activities, including most of the shooting sports. Targets of various kinds are also used in other sports, such as archery, darts, axe throwing, and bowling.

Websites representing targets, manufacturers, and retailers focusing on producing or distributing targets for a single sport should be listed in the shopping category corresponding to that sport. However, many manufacturers and retailers produce or offer targets for multiple sports, and they can be listed in this part of our directory. They could also be dual-listed.

When we think of targets, it is usually related to their use in shooting sports. Most of the targets used in shooting sports today are abstract figures, such as the circular target with the concentric rings we're all familiar with. However, earlier targets were often designed to resemble human opponents or game animals. This came from the military or hunting origins that began most shooting disciplines.

For example, early targets might have resembled a human torso, a deer, moose, or game bird rather than today's circular bullseye target. These are still available today, although circular targets are more commonly used.

The clay pigeons and other shooting clays used in trap, skeet, and sporting clays are also targets. These targets are generally made of clay and thrown into the air to mimic flying game birds.

Dartboards are similar to standard bullseye targets, although divided into 20 numbered sections with a double bullseye. Points are scored based on where the dart lands.

Axe throwing uses a target board, usually made of wood, also with concentric circles and a bullseye. Higher points are scored closer to the center.

Archery, crossbow shooting, and other precision sports use targets with varying sizes, distances, and angles to challenge the archer's accuracy and technique.

Some of the water sports even use targets. With competitive spearfishing, the targets might be artificial fish, while freediving might use underwater markers to test the skill and accuracy of a dive.

In bowling, the pins might be considered targets, as the objective is to strike them with a bowling ball, knocking them down.

As you can see, targets are used in several sports.

The most common targets are circular targets with concentric rings and a bullseye. This type of target might be made of paper, cardboard, plastic, steel, self-healing rubber, or electronic. Shooting sports will sometimes use targets designed to explode when struck by a bullet traveling at a suitable velocity to induce detonation.

Websites representing manufacturers or retailers offering targets for multiple sports may be listed here and/or the category representing the sports the targets are designed for.
