Flower shops, gift shops, and souvenir stores are the focus of topics in this category.

Although these are separate businesses, flower shops generally sell souvenirs or gifts as well as floral arrangements, and souvenirs are routinely purchased as gifts.

Flower shops are retail establishments where flowers and potted plants are sold. These shops offer a variety of floral arrangements and greenery, making them popular for purchasing gifts, decorating events, or brightening up spaces with natural beauty.

Gift shops are stores, often found in places like museums or tourist attractions, that sell souvenirs, memorabilia, and other items suitable for giving as presents. Gift shops are places where visitors can find unique and thoughtful gifts to take home or share with others.

Souvenir stores are retail shops where people can find unique and often locally themed items, such as mugs, keychains, t-shirts, and other keepsakes, to commemorate a visit to a specific place or event. These stores typically offer a variety of souvenirs that capture the essence of the location, making them popular among tourists and travelers.

Although flowers had been sold previously, floristry is believed to have developed in the Netherlands in the mid-19th century. Initially, merchants sold pre-made bouquets designed mainly for decorative purposes. Over time, flower shops expanded their offerings to include luxury flowers on a larger scale, contributing to the growth of wholesale flower businesses. The first flower shop in the United States opened in the late 1840s or early 1850s, marking the beginning of the floristry industry on the North American continent.

Retail florists offer fresh flowers and related products to consumers, creating custom arrangements for various occasions. Wholesale florists sell bulk flowers and related supplies to professionals in the trade, such as event planners and retail florists. Retail outlets, such as supermarkets and garden supply stores, also sell flowers alongside other products.

Florists have adapted to the digital age, providing online ordering and delivery services. Other businesses have developed networks of local flower shops to take orders, online or by telephone, that local florists in their network will fulfill.

Florists create beautiful arrangements in vases, baskets, or other containers using cut flowers, foliage, herbs, and ornamental grasses. Hand-tied bouquets are popular for special occasions like weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries. Florists also create permanent arrangements from dried or silk flowers designed to last longer. Other products include corsages, boutonnières, seasonal blooms, live plants, planters, and gift items. Most flower shops offer delivery services within a defined local area.

Gift shops and souvenir stores are more closely synonymous than floral shops. Gift shops are sometimes known as souvenir stores, gift stores, museum shops, or Christmas shops.

Souvenirs have been around for centuries. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans collected rare artifacts from various expeditions. During the 19th century, tourism popularized souvenir shopping at historic sites instead of picking up actual artifacts from the site.

Museum gift stores emerged alongside cultural institutions in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Initially, they offered reproductions from their collections or catalogs, but later mass-reproduction technologies allowed for cheaper alternatives.

Gift shops often sell souvenirs, but they also sell greeting cards, decorative or personalized mugs, scented candles, diaries, gift cards, flowers, soft toys, posters or wall art, and games, particularly board or card games.

As noted above, the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans collected rare artifacts during their travels.

After the crucifixion of Jesus, pilgrims collected dirt and pebbles from the Holy Land as sacred relics. Christian pilgrimages in Europe and the Middle East led to an early souvenir industry, as pilgrims bought small bottles of sacred water or images of local saints.

Well-known tourist attractions were besieged by souvenir-seeking visitors who chipped away pieces of buildings to capture a bit of the magic. Rather than allowing for continued desecration, miniature imitations or replicas of these places were created for sale to tourists. Even today, people who visit Paris for the first time return home with a replica of the Eiffel Tower. Similarly, a lucrative industry has involved selling replicas of the Statue of Liberty, particularly to visitors to New York.

The term "souvenir" entered the English language in the late 18th century. Today, we might think of keychains, t-shirts, and hats, but these are recent additions.

Souvenir stores are also known as gift shops, keepsake stores, memento shops, remembrance corners, trinket stores, and memorabilia boutiques.
