The island state of Tasmania, in Australia, was first settled by Europeans in 1642 and called Anthony van Diemen's Land, in honor of the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman's sponsor. In 1777, Captain James Cook landed at Adventure Bay, along with William Bligh. The early settlers were convicts and their guards who had been sent to develop industries and agriculture. Between 1803 and 1853, more than 75,000 convicts were sent to Tasmania. In 1856, the name was changed to Tasmania.
