River Falls is located on the Wisconsin side of its border with Minnesota, with St. Paul, Minnesota being only about twenty-five miles northwest of the city, most of which is in Pierce County, with a small portion in St. Croix County, Wisconsin. The city was founded in 1848 by Joel Foster and his indentured servant, Dick. First named Greenwood, its name was changed when it was found that another Greenwood existed within the state.
