Plover is a village, and a town, in Portage County, Wisconsin. The area that later became Plover was selected as the county seat of Portage in 1844, but the area was then unsettled. In 1845, a post office was built there, under the name of Plover Portage, which was changed to Plover in 1850 Between 1857 and 1864, its name was changed to Algernon, Stanton, and then back to Plover. The Village was incorporated, unincorporated and incorporated again.
