The City of Pewaukee was incorporated from what was formerly the Town of Pewaukee. The Village of Pewaukee was incorporated out of the town before it incorporated as a city, and is surrounded by the city. The city's name comes from the Potawatomi word meaning either "the dusty water" or "lake of shells".
