Kenosha, Wisconsin, the seat of Kenosha County, was settled in 1835 and called Pike. As it became an important shipping port, it was renamed to Southport. In 1850, it was finally named Kenosha, which is a phonetic version of "kinoje," which means "pike" in Chippewa.
