Charleston, the capital of West Virginia, is the county seat of Kanawha County. The first permanent settlement was established in 1788, and in 1791, Daniel Boone was an assemblyman of the Kanawha County Assembly. It is situated at the confluence of the Kanawha and Elk Rivers.
