West Virginia, nicknamed the Mountain State, was a disputed territory for many years when the U.S. was still new, though it remained part of Virginia. It broke away from the Confederacy, however, during the Civil War, and was admitted into the Union in 1863. The capital of the state is Charleston, and it is also the largest city.
