The state of Washington, in the Pacific Northwest, was once part of the Washington Territory. It is the 42nd state, having been admitted into the Union in 1889. Known as the Evergreen State, it is served by its capital, Olympia. Its largest city is Seattle, named after the famed Indian chief.
