Named after Queen Elizabeth I, the Virgin Queen, the Commonwealth of Virginia is nicknamed Old Dominion. It is the birthplace of eight presidents, and is, for that reason, often called Mother of Presidents. It was the 10th state in the Union, having joined in 1788. The state's capital is Richmond. Virginia Beach is the largest city.
