St. Johnsbury, Vermont is the seat of Caledonia County and is frequently called "St. Jay" by locals. The town was granted in 1760 and called Bessborough. It was regranted and settled in 1786 under the name of Dunmore. It was organized in 1790 and named St. Johnsbury at the suggestion of Ethan Allen, the founder of Vermont.
