The Vermont city of Rutland is the shire town, or county seat, of Rutland County. Originally chartered in 1761 as part of the New Hampshire Land Grant, The first settlers arrived in 1770 and a controversy was started when New York claimed the same land grants under the name "Socialborough." The controversy was the reason for the formation of the Republic of Vermont, from 1777 to 1791, at which time Vermont became the fourteenth state.
