Bennington, Vermont, is, along with Manchester, one of two shire towns of Bennington County. Surrounded by both the Taconic Mountain ranges, it borders the Green Mountain National Forest. New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth chartered this, the first town in the territory and named it after himself, and the settlers arrived, forming the settlement in 1761 by Congregational Separatists from Connecticut and Massachusetts.
