Salt Lake City, the capital of Utah, was founded in 1847 by Mormon pioneers led there by Brigham Young after the religion's founder was killed. Young, the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said that he saw the City in a vision. The church's headquarters is still located in the city. The pioneers called the area Deseret and attempted to have it recognized as a state. Congress refused and instead established the Utah Territory.
