The city of Ogden is the seat of Weber County, Utah. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Utah, it was originally named Fort Buenaventura. It was established in 1846 and was purchased the next year by the Mormon settlers, who called it Brownsville. It was changed to Ogden after Peter Skene Ogden, a brigade leader of the Hudson's Bay Company.
