The most populated city within the confines of San Juan County, Utah. Originally named as Grayson, after the wife of settler Joseph Lyman, Nellie Grayson Lyman. It was changed to its current name when the city lost to the then Thurber, Utah, when an American educator, historian, and wealthy easterner, Thomas W. Bicknell, offered books to the town that would adopt his name. The city received 500 books and was then renamed after Bicknell's wife's maiden name.
