The state of Utah, the 45th state, joined the Union in 1896. About 80% of the population lives in and around the capital Salt Lake City, and the rest of the state is very sparsely populated. After the assassination of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon Church, Brigham Young led the first wave of religious pioneers to Utah, where they were joined by 70,000 others in the next 22 years. Between 50 and 60% of its residents are Mormon. Its nickname is the Beehive State
