Mission is located in Hidalgo County, just west of McAllen, Texas. The city was founded in 1908, when the Missouri Pacific Railroad established a railway station four miles north of the La Lomita Chapel, which was itself constructed in 1762. The city that grew up around this rail station took its name from the chapel, and Mission was founded.
