The city of Gonzales, Texas, is the county seat of Gonzales County. It is one of the earliest European settlements in the state, and the very first west of the Colorado River. First established as the capital of the Dewitt Colony in 1825, it was abandoned in 1826 after repeated Indian attacks and moved to a nearby location where it remains to this day.
