Gainesville, the seat of Cooke County, is located just short of seventy miles north of Dallas. Its roots go back to 1841, when W.S. Peters and Associates signed their first contract with the Republic of Texas, promising to bring six hundred families into the area. In 1850, Gainesville was established on a forty-acre tract, first known as Liberty, a name that proved short-lived, as a town by that name already existed in Texas. The town was renamed for General Edmund Gaines.
