Situated on the border of the United States and Mexico, Del Rio is the county seat of Val Verde County, Texas. In 1883, when its residents requested postal service, the U.S. Post Office shortened its name from San Felipe del Rio" to "Del Rio" to avoid confusion with "San Felipe de Austin."
