Austin, Texas, the county seat of Travis County also serves as the state capital. Originally named Waterloo, the area was settled just a few years before the Republic of Texas became a country in 1839. At that time, it became the capital of that nation, and it was renamed in honor of Stephen Austin, who held the land grant and led the colonization of the area.
