The Republic of Texas has been claimed by Spain, France, and Mexico during its history. In 1836, Texas won its independence and in 1845, it became the 28th state. Their statehood started the Mexican-American War the next year.Texas, nicknamed the Lone Star State, was one of the first states to join the Confederacy. Its capital is Austin, and the largest city in the state is Houston.
