Tennessee is known as the Volunteer State due to the role its volunteer soldiers played in the War of 1812. Memphis is the largest city in the state, and Nashville is the capital. The 16th state to enter the Union, it became a state in 1796, and it seceded in 1861. It was the first of the Confederate States to re-enter the United States after the Civil War in 1866.
