Located in south-central South Dakota, Winner is the seat of Tripp County. Its name was derived from the fact that it was the winner in the struggle to establish a town along the railroad right-of-way when the Chicago North Western moved westward from Dallas, South Dakota in 1909. Winner was incorporated in 1911.
