Rapid City, South Dakota, county seat of Pennington County, is situated in the Black Hills and named for the nearby Rapid Creek. Gold was discovered in the Black Hills in 1874, which brought hordes of settlers into the area.The city was devastated in 1972, when massive flooding killed more than 250 people and property damage was more than $100 million, and it took nearly twenty years to rebuild.
