As with many other towns in eastern South Dakota, the town of Iroquois was established as the railroad continued westward past De Smet, reaching the area that was to become Iroquois in the spring of 1880. The town was incorporated in 1889. Its K-12 school building is located in Kingsbury County, while the school parking lot is in Beadle County.
