Originally the southern part of the Dakota Territory, the 40th state, South Dakota, traces its name to the original inhabitants, the Lakota and Dakota Sioux. The official nickname is the Mount Rushmore State, due to the existence of that monument in the Black Hills, which is west of the Badlands. The largest city is Sioux Falls, and the capital is Pierre.
