Wagener is located in the western part of Aiken County, South Carolina. The community was originally known as Pinder Town. Later settlers from North Carolina included several families by the name of Gunter, which led to the town being known as Gunter's Cross Roads or Guntersville for a time. The town grew when the Southern Railroad came through town, and was renamed Wagener in honor of George Wagener, whose efforts contributed to the railroad running through the community.
