Irmo is a town located partly in both Lexington and Richland counties of central South Carolina. Although settled prior to that time, Irmo was chartered in 1890 after the Columbia, Newberry and Laurens Railroad was opened. Its name is the result of a combination of the names of Captain C.J. Iredell and Henry Mosely, both important figures in the founding of the community. Rather than a central downtown area, Irmo consists of clusters of suburban neighborhoods.
