Incorporated since 1743, Middletown is part of one of Rhode Island's earliest settlements. Initially part of Newport, property owners in the northern section of Newport petitioned the General Assembly for independence, resulting in that section of the town being set apart in 1731, and incorporated seven years later. The town is located in Newport County, and gains its name from its position between Portsmouth and Newport.
