Incorporated in 1746, Cumberland, Rhode Island was initially settled as part of Rehoboth, Massachusetts. It was later transferred to Rhode Island as part of the settlement of a boundary dispute. Cumberland was named for Prince William, Duke of Cumberland. One of the first Europeans to settle the area was William Blackstone, sometimes spelled Blaxton, who left Boston after a disagreement with the Puritans over religion.
