Wynnewood is in southeastern Garvin County, Oklahoma. The settlement was established by John H. Walner in 1886, after he moved his house and store there from Cherokee Town, to be along the route of the proposed railroad. Many of the town's early settlers were Confederate veterans of the Civil War. Initially named Walner, the town was renamed by railroad personnel after the rail line was completed, for the city by that name in Pennsylvania.
