Situated in the Sans Bois Mountains of southeastern Oklahoma, Wilburton is the seat of Latimer County, Oklahoma. The community was established along the Butterfield Overland Mail and stage route in 1890, and was originally part of the Choctaw Nation. Wilburton was reportedly named for Will Burton, a contractor and surveyor for the railroad, who platted the townsite.
