Situated in south-central Craig County, Vinita serves as the county seat. The original townsite was about two miles south of the curren town, which moved to be nearer to the railroad, to a site that was then known as Downingville. In 1872, Vinita was the second Cherokee town to incorporate under a law passed by the Cherokee Council. When tribal courts were abolished, Vinita incorporated again in 1898, under Arkansas law, which was then extended over the area.
