Situated on the dividing ridge between the Arkansas and Poteau rivers in northern Le Flore County, Spiro is about ten miles west of the Arkansas border. Like many other Oklahoma towns, Spiro began as a railroad railroad station, when the railroad connected the area with Fort Smith in 1898, and a post office was established there.
