Situated along the North Canadian River, Shawnee is the seat of Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. The area was home to the Creek and Seminole prior to the Civil War. After the War, the area was given to the Sac and Fox, Citizen Band Potawatomi, Absentee Shawnee, and Kickapoo, then the area was opened to non-Indian settlers in 1891.
