Quapaw is located in the very northeastern part of Ottawa County, Oklahoma. The town's post office was established in 1897, and named for Quapaw Chief John Quapaw, who was one of three men who were responsible for the community's development. In 1917, the small settlement of New Town Quapaw was consolidated with Quapaw, and the town was incorporated.
