Poteau is the seat of LeFlore County, in southeastern Oklahoma. Almost completely surrounded by mountains, Poteau is situated in the Poteau River Valley, and has its origins in 1885, when a general store and a few houses were built there. Its post office was established in 1888, and Poteau was incorporated the following year.
