Situated in southeastern Kay County, Ponca City, Oklahoma was founded during the Cherokee Outlet Opening of 1893. Initially known as New Ponca, the town was incorporated that same year, and a post office was established the following year, named for the Ponca tribe. A portion of the city is in Osage County.
