Founded during the land run of 1889, the town's original name was Verbeck, a railroad employee by the name of Al Moore had difficulty receiving his mail, so he painted his last name on a board and nailed it onto the boxcar in which he was living. When the town's first post office was established, the postmaster designated the town's name as Moore, and it was incorporated under that name in 1893.
