Heavener is located in Le Flore County, Oklahoma. The city is named for Joseph H. Heavener, who arrived in 1877, and was one of the area's early white settlers, at a time when the community was part of the Choctaw Nation. Prior to its incorporation as Heavener in 1898, the community was known by a number of names, including Prairie of the Tall Grass, Choctaw City, Prairie View, Long Prairie, and Grand Prairie.
