Hammon, Oklahoma is located mostly in Roger Mills County, while a portion of the incorporated town extends into Custer County. The area just north of the town site belonged to Chief White Shield, and many Cheyenne lived there in what was known as Old Camp. Other settlers moved into the area in 1892. Originally, the town was entirely within Custer County, but when the railroad laid its track in 1910, most of the community moved west into Roger Mills County. Hammon was incorporated in 1910.
