In 1541, Francisco Vazquez de Coronado was the first European to come through what is now Elk City, Oklahoma. Situated in Beckham County, the first land lots were sold in what would develop into a town in 1901. Initially, the community was named Busch but, since that name was similar to another post office name, the town was renamed Elk City in 1907, when Oklahoma became a state. Elk City is located in Beckham County.
