Durant is the seat of Bryan County, Oklahoma. The first structure that began the town was a boxcar that was placed, without wheels, on the east side of the tracks. In 1873, Dixon Durant built the town's first building on the east side of the boxcar. His wooden store was known as Durant Station, which was shortened to Durant in 1882.
