Beaver, the seat of Beaver County, is located in northwest Oklahoma's Panhandle region. The town began as a fur-trading post along Beaver Creek in 1879. Is original name was Beaver City, and was the capital of Cimarron Territory. When that territory was assigned to Oklahoma Territory, Beaver City became the seat of the Oklahoma Panhandle, then known as Seventh County. When Oklahoma became a state, the panhandle was divided, with the easternmost county retaining the name of Beaver.
