A suburb of Cleveland, Willoughby is a city in Lake County, Ohio. During its history, the town has belonged to six different counties, and bore two names before adopting its current name. Originally, the community was known as Charlton, then Chagrin. Locally, it was sometimes referred to as Abbott’s Mill or Chagrin Mills. Dale Abbot came there in 1787, purchasing two hundred acres eleven years later, building a sawmill and gristmill.
